Kion Etete scored nine goals in 21 games for Tottenham’s under-23 side last season

Teenager Kion Etete scored twice on his first senior start as League Two Northampton came from behind to knock Coventry City out of the Carabao Cup.

Tyler Walker converted Jamie Allen’s pass to give the Championship side an early lead, but the Cobblers fought back and Etete levelled just after half-time.

The 19-year-old, on a season-long loan from Tottenham, then grabbed the winner with his second of the night.

Town goalkeeper Jon Maxted denied Julien Dacosta an equaliser late on as Coventry crashed out.

The Sky Blues dominated the early stages of the tie and went ahead when Jordan Shipley’s deflected cross fell to Allen, who set up Walker for a close-range finish.

Northampton should have drawn level soon afterwards, with Scott Pollock twice denied by Ben Wilson and Danny Rose’s effort rattling the post before Etete also went close with a glancing header.

But the Cobblers’ equaliser arrived seven minutes after the restart, when the young forward stole possession from Declan Drysdale and ran on to slam a clinical half-volley past Wilson.

Dacosta, the only survivor from Coventry’s starting line-up at the weekend, almost restored their lead with a curling attempt that tested Maxted.

But Etete netted the winner for the Northampton, pouncing on Fraser Horsfall’s flick-on and making enough contact to force the ball over the line.
