The post denied Reading’s Jess Fishlock a third goal of the season

Reading were held to an eighth WSL draw of the season after a goalless game with Tottenham at the Madejski Stadium.

Jess Fishlock’s low strike hit the post moments before the break after Spurs failed to deal with a long ball.

Home goalkeeper Grace Moloney saved from Rosella Ayane one-on-one and then blocked Gemma Davison’s close-range effort.

Spurs goalkeeper Aurora Mikalsen also made a fine point-blank save with her feet after good work from Emma Harries.

Reading came into the game eager to bounce back from defeat at struggling Bristol City, while Spurs were equally keen to snap a four-game losing streak, and while both sides achieved that, the draw is little help to either.

The Royals have comfortably the most draws in the Women’s Super League, but are now five points adrift of Everton in fifth place having played a game more, while Tottenham are just five points above bottom side West Ham in eighth.

After a first half light on goalmouth action, the match opened up after the break with a flurry of decent chances, with winger Ayane causing the home defence particular problems, forcing a defensive mix-up from which Davison almost netted.

Spurs piled on late pressure as they sought a win to move clear of the relegation scrap, but again found Moloney standing in their way, making another reaction stop to keep out Alanna Kennedy’s header.
